Scores are our editorial rating, not a lab test result — see how we pick.
Placemats are bought for how they look and kept for what they do. The looking-at part is real - a mat defines a place setting, breaks up a long table, and makes an ordinary plate look deliberate. But the reason a set of mats is still in the drawer four years later is duller than that: they are the thin layer between a hot plate, a dripping glass, a child with a fork, and a table that cost real money.
Which means the first question is not color or weave. It is what the table underneath needs protecting from, and how much work you are willing to do to keep the mats themselves clean. Those two answers sort the entire category into two halves - the wipeable ones and the washable ones - and almost nobody is happy having bought from the wrong half. Below are the criteria that decide it, the sizes that actually fit a place setting, and five sets that each answer the question differently.
How we judged these placemats
We have not lab-tested these mats. The picks come from live listing data and the manufacturers' stated specifications, judged against five criteria that decide whether a set of mats stays on the table.
1. Wipeable or washable - the fork in the road
Vinyl, faux leather and cork are wiped. Cotton and braided cotton-polyester are washed. A wipeable mat is back in service in thirty seconds and never needs a laundry cycle, which is why households with children end up there. A washable mat handles a real spill properly rather than smearing it, and looks like cloth on a laid table. Decide this before anything else; everything downstream follows from it.
2. Heat, and what the table is made of
A warm dinner plate is nothing. A serving dish out of the oven can leave a white heat ring in a wood finish through a thin mat. Cork is the best insulator in this category by a distance - it is literally trivet material. Woven vinyl is good. Faux leather is adequate. Fabric is not insulation at all, and a hot dish on a cotton mat on a walnut table is how tables get marked.
3. Size against a real place setting
A dinner plate is typically 10 to 11 inches across, which our guide to dinner plate sizes goes through properly. A 12-inch-deep mat holds the plate and nothing else; 13 by 19 inches holds a plate, flatware on both sides and a glass at the corner, which is what a set table actually needs. Round mats are usually 15 inches, which is the equivalent allowance.
4. Grip, on both faces
A mat that slides when somebody cuts into a steak is worse than no mat, because it takes the plate with it. Cork and heavy braided mats grip bare wood naturally. Vinyl and faux leather usually need a textured or backed underside, which the better ones have. The test on delivery: put a plate on the mat and push it sideways. If the mat moves, it will keep moving.
5. Whether it looks like cloth
Last, deliberately, because this is the criterion that drives most purchases and should not. Real cotton is unmistakable in a lit room, woven vinyl convincing from four feet away, and faux leather is a deliberate look rather than an imitation of one. A mat you like looking at but never use because it stains is a worse buy than a plainer one on the table every night.
Placemat sizes and what fits on them
| Size | Shape | Fits | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 17 x 12 in | Rectangle | Plate plus flatware, tight on a glass | Everyday tables, the common size |
| 19 x 13 in | Rectangle | Full place setting with room to spare | A table you set properly |
| 15 in | Round | Plate plus flatware | Round and pedestal tables |
| 13 in | Round | Plate, flatware crowds the edge | Small tables, breakfast nooks |
The picks
Leetaltree woven vinyl, set of 6: the default
Woven vinyl is the material most people want and few ask for by name. It looks like a woven fabric mat from across the room, wipes clean like plastic, takes a hot dish without complaint, and sits at the bottom of the price range for the category. For a table that gets used every day by people who are not going to run a laundry cycle for placemats, this is simply the right answer.
The cons are honest ones. Up close it is clearly vinyl, and a formally laid table will show that. Crumbs lodge in the weave, so cleaning means a shake outside as well as a wipe. And the woven edges can fray after a year or two of heavy use - at this price that is a replacement rather than a tragedy.
SHACOS round braided, set of 4: for a round table
Fifteen-inch braided rounds in a cotton-polyester blend, which is the shape a round table wants and the shape most ranges skip. On a pedestal or round table these follow the curve instead of leaving triangular gaps between settings, and because the braid is a fabric blend they go in the washing machine rather than being wiped.
Against them: fabric absorbs a spill instead of repelling it, so a knocked glass means a wash, not a wipe. They give less heat protection than cork or vinyl, so a hot serving dish still wants a trivet. And they come four to a box, so a round table that seats six needs two boxes and leaves you with spares.
Maxpearl faux leather, set of 6: for houses with children
A smooth, genuinely waterproof mat that takes one wipe and looks deliberately modern rather than apologetic about not being cloth. Juice sits on the surface until somebody deals with it. Nothing lodges anywhere, because there is no weave to lodge in. The mats are reversible, so a scuff on one face is solved by flipping it rather than replacing the set.
The trade-offs: it reads as leatherette up close, which not every dining room suits. The surface scuffs where plates get dragged rather than lifted. And it insulates less than cork, so a hot dish leaves a warm patch you can feel through it.
Fasmov cork, set of 6: for protecting a wood table
Cork is the pick when the table underneath is the expensive part of the room. It is the best insulator here by a clear margin, it grips bare wood on both faces so nothing slides, and it lies dead flat straight out of the box, which no fabric mat does. If you have a solid-wood table and hot food reaches it regularly, this is the category answer.
Three real drawbacks. Cork is porous, so an oily spill that sits will soak in and stay. There is no machine washing - a damp cloth is the whole cleaning routine. And the edges chip and crumble if the mats get stacked carelessly in a drawer, so they want to lie flat in storage.
Sweet Home Collection cotton, set of 6: for a table you set
The only mat here made of actual cloth, and in a lit room that is immediately obvious. A two-tone cotton weave at 13 by 19 inches, which is the generous size that takes a plate, flatware on both sides and a glass without anything overlapping. It launders with the cloth napkins, so one wash resets the whole table.
What you accept in exchange: a real spill means a wash, not a wipe, and there is no shortcut. It comes out of the machine creased and wants a press to look right. And it offers the least heat protection of the five, so hot dishes need a trivet on top of the mat rather than trusting the mat.
The five materials, side by side
Almost every placemat sold is one of five materials, and the differences between them are practical rather than aesthetic. This is the summary worth having before you shop, because listings describe all of them as heat resistant and washable, and only some of them are either.
| Material | Cleaning | Heat | Honest weakness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Woven vinyl | Wipe, shake out crumbs | Good | Edges fray eventually; reads as vinyl up close |
| Faux leather | One wipe, nothing lodges | Adequate | Scuffs where plates are dragged |
| Cork | Damp cloth only | Best here | Porous - oil and wine soak in |
| Cotton / braided blend | Machine washable | Poor | Absorbs spills; creases in the wash |
| Bamboo / wood slat | Wipe, never soak | Good | Rigid, noisy, and splits if it gets wet often |
The pattern that falls out of the table is the one worth remembering: the materials that clean fastest insulate well and look least like cloth, and the one that looks most like cloth cleans slowest and insulates worst. There is no mat that wins every column, which is why plenty of households own two sets - a wipeable set for weeknights and a cloth set for the table they lay when people come over.
Mats, runners and chargers
Three things get layered on a table and they are not interchangeable. A placemat defines one seat and protects the table under one plate. A runner goes down the center, protects nothing useful, and exists to break up a long bare surface - it sits under the serving dishes and the candles, not under the place settings. A charger is a large decorative plate that sits under the dinner plate and comes off before the food arrives.
Layering all three at once is a wedding-table look rather than a dinner-at-home look. Mats plus a runner is the combination that works in a normal dining room: the settings are defined, the middle of the table has something going on, and the whole thing still comes apart in one armful when the meal is over.
How to lay them so the table reads right
Leave at least two inches of bare table between adjacent mats and about an inch between the mat and the table edge, so the mats look placed rather than tiled. On a long table, that spacing is what stops eight settings from turning into a continuous band of mat. If settings are crowding, the fix is a smaller mat rather than less gap - the gap is what makes mats look intentional.
The rest of the setting follows the usual order, and our guide to how to set a table covers where the flatware, glass and napkin sit relative to the mat. If the mats are going on a table that mainly hosts a crowd rather than a seated dinner, the hosting-side question is served better by setting up a buffet table than by place settings at all.
Which one to buy
- Best overall: Leetaltree woven vinyl, set of 6. Looks woven, wipes clean, handles heat, costs the least.
- Best for a round table: SHACOS round braided, set of 4. The right shape, and machine washable.
- Best with children at the table: Maxpearl faux leather, set of 6. Waterproof, reversible, one-wipe clean.
- Best heat protection: Fasmov cork, set of 6. Trivet material under every plate.
- Best for a laid table: Sweet Home Collection cotton, set of 6. Real cloth, and the roomiest size here.
Placemats protect the table from what is set down on it, which makes the covered pieces that stay out through the meal the natural next thing to get right - the best butter dishes roundup covers the one that is on the table for the whole meal.

Common questions
What size should a placemat be?
The two standard rectangular sizes are roughly 12 by 18 inches and 13 by 19 inches, and round mats are usually 15 inches. The larger rectangle is the one to buy if you set a full place setting, because a dinner plate is 10 to 11 inches across and a 12-inch-deep mat leaves no room for flatware beside it. Measure your table first: you want at least two inches of bare table between adjacent mats.
Should I use placemats or a tablecloth?
Placemats if the table is worth looking at, a tablecloth if it is not. Mats show the wood and define each seat, which suits a table you chose deliberately. A cloth covers the whole surface, which is the better answer for a damaged table, a folding table, or a crowd where food will land everywhere. They are not mutually exclusive - a runner plus mats is a common compromise.
Will placemats protect a wood table from heat?
Cork will, vinyl mostly will, and fabric will not. Cork is what trivets are made of and is the material to choose if hot dishes land on the table regularly. Even then, a serving dish straight from a 400-degree oven wants a dedicated trivet, not a placemat - placemats are rated for a warm plate, not for cookware.
How many placemats do I need?
One per seat at your table, plus a spare set if you host. Mats are sold in fours and sixes, which rarely matches a table of eight, so plan on buying two boxes and keeping the leftovers as the spares. Unlike napkins you do not need a second full set in the wash, because wipeable mats are back in service in a minute.
Can placemats go in the washing machine?
Cotton and most braided cotton-polyester mats can. Vinyl, faux leather and cork cannot - those are wipe-clean only, and a washing machine will delaminate or warp them. This is the single most important practical difference between the two halves of this category, and it is worth deciding before you buy rather than after.
Do round placemats work on a rectangular table?
They work, but they waste space. A round mat on a rectangular table leaves awkward gaps between settings and fits fewer people along the same length. Round mats are bought for round tables, where they follow the edge instead of fighting it. On a rectangular table, buy the rectangle.
